Maison Jérôme
The Story of Jérôme
In 1863, a mysterious man was discovered on the beach at Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia. Both of his legs had been amputated above the knees, and he was unable—or unwilling—to speak. When asked his name, he reportedly uttered the word “Jérôme,” and it was the only name he was ever known by.

Jérôme was taken in by Acadian families in Clare, who cared for him with the support of the provincial government. Though he remained a mystery for the rest of his life, his presence inspired compassion and intrigue. Visitors came from near and far to see him, and his story became part of local folklore. He lived in the community for nearly 50 years until his death in 1912, and he was laid to rest in Meteghan under the simple name “Jérôme”.

Why Maison Jérôme
At Maison Jérôme, Inclusion Clare drew inspiration from Jérôme’s story because it embodies the heart of our mission. He represents the essence of caring for those who are vulnerable—living with injury, silence, and uncertainty. The compassion shown to him by the community reflects the values we hold dear: respect, empathy, and inclusion. Jérôme’s legacy reminds us that presence, kindness, and safety are among the greatest gifts we can offer one another.
